Upbeat Glitch R&B? Soulful Experimental House? Call it what you like, but the music of Warez defies easy description. Raised on a steady diet of Jazz and R&B as a child, Warez quickly developed a fascination for the sonic mechanics and structure of pop music in all its various forms. He has since parlayed this into a style he refers to as “Glitch Pop”, an offbeat and reference-rich musical excursion that draws on the influence of such electronic forerunners as Apparat (BPitch Control), Prefuse 73 (Warp) and Outputmessage (Ghostly International). The Dance EP which is Moodgadget’s 5th release effortlessly blends glitchy, experimental, R&B tinged Electronic House into a sound like no other.
A surfer will venture out past the breaks and wade patiently for the right wave to catch. When the opportunity presents itself, the timing has to be right and the approach has to be deliberate.
In the sea of music, there isn’t much difference. In order to get at what’s good, you have to swim out past the noise and wait patiently. That’s when artists like 40 Winks present themselves. Good timing and patience yielded The Lucid Effect.
40 Winks is a pair of producers from Antwerp – padmo’ and weedy. Both are becoming well established and are pretty active in the international scene. They have been working recently with twin cities MC m*anifest.
The production on this album is on point and well crafted. The tracks range in energy and content. The songs move nicely together and keep it interesting. The album over all has a jazz feel to it, something in between Madlib and early shadow.
Oddly enough, I didn’t realize padmo’ was on this album. Coincidentally Ness had turned me onto him a week ago. You got to check this dude out on YouTube.
Her voice is what attracted me at first. I bet her voice sounds the same live.
Her self-titled 7 song EP is very solid and showcases a variety of different vocal ranges. It’s well worth the $6.93 you can by it for on iTunes plus. I just bought it about an hour ago and it has been spinning ever since.
What a great line from a great song.
“I’ve heard that you’ve been smoking again, we all do what we have to.”
It seems to be rare these days that a rock band has the energy that the Foals have. From Oxford England, they attended the same boarding school as members of Radiohead. Their sound is clearly experimental, but still confiding within the pop realm. This s#$t should be the the summer anthem of the year. I hope the athletes in Beijing are rocking this track.
I am happy to say I am going to see Foals this weekend. They are playing the 3-day festival Lollapalooza in Chicago. Barack Obama is going to be there as well, he will introduce Kanye West on stage. Should be a killer moment, maybe even history.
Sometimes I need music like this. It feels present, but in non obtrusive way. Kilmek latest offing is full of reverb effected string assembles, piano splatter, and computer manipulation. Mastermind Sebastian Meissner is not new to the digital scene. He has done his time for some great labes such as the now defunkt Mille Plateaux and Kompakt. This track here is the last track from Dedications, which happens to be mastered by Twerk. Each track on the album is dedicated and inspired by two famous artists. This is a highly recommend listening from beginning to end.
I’m posting this under Inspiration because for me, personally, this is the type of music that gets my juices going. Sonic, flowing ambient arrangements that unfold and grab a hold of you. Chris recently mentioned Moodgadget Records and they have quickly become one of my favorite labels. They’ve put out some stellar releases and compilations – one of those being Expanse at Low Levels.
There’s a lot to like about Neighborhood Suicide. This album has some real treats. Plus all of it is interesting and cinematic.
You get a sense of Radius’ sound right away as he introduces chopped harmonies into a mix hip hop and electro. With driving arrangements and sound he bridges genres and leverages samples with an ear for timing. It’ll keep your head banging.
Props to Raduis (Chicago native Ramon Norwood) for your effort and creativity. Keep doin’ it.
Some beautiful sonic bliss from Mweslee’s new EP “4×7 Beat Series #4”. Just posting half of the track since the EP is only two beats long. Gotta be fair. Also check out the Megaplast EP.
To put it simply, Kevin Martin has been destroying it lately. Over the years he’s recorded under a handful of aliases, most of which were industrial rock or industrial hip hop and always aggressive. It was the kind of music you’d play while watching building demolition videos, or muddy gladiator battles. Martin’s second album as The Bug takes some key pointers from the dubstep and grime scenes and employs a lot of precision control from some giant emcees. I still don’t understand how the UK cranks out SO much talent, but I don’t see anyone complaining!
The mighty Flow Dan, from Roll Deep, steps up for some help in the second half of this track called “Skeng,” ominously discussing some thoughts after Killa P’s machine gun verses. The Bug’s new album, London Zoo is out now on Ninja Tune. Also check out the track Jah War for a better example of Flow Dan’s cadence. Evil, evil.
The fact that one of the best MC’s in hip hop is praising an up and comer named Jay Electronica is something to be said. A lovely acapella done by none other than Mos Def of Act 1: Eternal Sunshine. For those of those unaware of who Jay is – he is the duality of New Orleans’ other well know MC – Lil wayne. The recording here was found via Okayplayer and is from the actual performance – so bear with the sound quality.
Fuckin well right. A free album by 9th wonder and MURS. Well – I should say MURS would love for you to drop some bills on it. We did. Don’t be a mooch – support!
What does a rapper look like these days? I’ve seen alot of em. I like the kind that dress up like dinosaurs and power rangers.. shit’s ill!! Oh… you never heard of those cats? Ok.. Well, if they look anything like Asher it’s safe to assume you’ve seen a cool guy. Hopefully I’m not alone in thinking this, but what’s up with all the stereotype hype in hip hop these days?! Granted I wasn’t aware how suburban Asher was until seeing this video, and this photo to the right. He just sounded like a good emcee from the beginning. Why does this crap even matter?? Also maybe I’m lost on what’s hot in mixtape culture, can we hear this cat on his own beats? Props to Ness for sending me this, surprised we didn’t post it before. Oh and back to the stereotype hype tip.. John Brown has a problem with Asher stealin’ all the suburb spotlight. Haha… Ummm huh? Man.. hip hop is a circus right now. But anyways, I’m diggin this one track from The Greenhouse Effect mixtape, a collective effort between Dj Drama, Don Cannon, and Asher Roth. It’s free to download right here ya heeeeeaaard.
“The London architect Zaha Hadid designed the Mobile Art pavilion, which has already made a stop in Tokyo. The structure is made of lightweight panels that are packed in 51 shippable containers.”
You might not have heard of him but you should have. Besides being a true lyricist Kam Moye has the rare ability to fill head banging tracks with substance without making them seem preachy. Whats even more incredible is that his new EP is free for download on my buddy Frank William Miller Junior’s “Rappers I Like site.” Kam gets it, give the people something free to show and prove and gain respect and loyal fans among true heads. He has a fan in me and I can’t wait for a full LP although at 8 tracks tracks long his EP gives me a good idea of what one would sound like. Enjoy two hot junts from the EP below. Respect.
We got an email today from Synflood with a link to a mighty tasty mix he compiled supposedly for us. I must say that the lineup of artists he has featured in his mix makes my heart go pitter patter. “It’s focussing on the LA Beat scene, but has also elements of hip-hop, techno/house, grime/dubstep, jazz and broken beats in it….a quite pluralistic approach…”

This is a result of both lazy-ness, but thought I should give some love to an underrated MC and also touch on something that I love in hip-hop . . . the incorporation of Jazz.
“In 2002 his second album, All of the Above was released on the label, Coup D’etat. It featured production by DJ Spinna, Usef Dinero, and DJ Jazzy Jeff. In 2003 J-Live simultaneously released two EPs, Always Has Been and Always Will Be. Always Has Been was a collection of J-Live’s six early singles which did not appear on any of his albums. Always Will Be consisted of 8 new songs. Both EPs were released on the label, Triple Threat Productions. His third LP, The Hear After was released in 2005 on the label, Penalty (Ryko), and was followed in 2007 with another EP, Reveal the Secret, and in 2008 with an LP entitled Then What Happened?, both from BBE Records.”
The track from J-Live is from his latest effort – Then what happened The Jazz influence on this track is pretty obvious and I thought it would be appropriate to post one of my all time favorite Jazz laced hip hop tunes by Stetsasonic
Another fine example of Los Angeles talent crushin’ it!
I’ve definitely been missing out not listening to Take. This is a great album. I’ve had it on repeat for hours wanting to start over when it ends and get back on what is an introspective ride. Whenever an album gets referred to as a journey this is basically what they mean.
Im picking up on all sorts of influences. I hear jazz, electro and boom bap fused together for a well crafted delivery. I don’t think anything I’ve heard is lacking good prodution, originality or substance. Just a great effort.
Take has collaborated on quite a bit of music I already dig. Lukid, Daedelus and Caural to name a few. He also dropped a fresh EP recently. I chose to pick up on his full length that released the early part of this year. It just shows his ability to produce and sustain jams.
John Robinson’s been hard at work. Check out The Leak... It’s a couple years old but it was the first I’d heard from the former Scienz of Life member in a long time. This new album opens with nothing shy of a spirit moving speech about the importance of our hip hop culture and call to responsibility. The message is so well put, it’s burned into my memory. Listen below. Rightly named “What’s the Science?”… This album will make you smarter! The lyrical delivery is flawless. A deep well of wisdom to dip into. With beats by Ammoncontact, Dwight Trible, Flylo, and Daedelus (to name a few), how can you not like the production? The album is worth the listen just for that. My faves are “Inspiration”, “The Right Song”, and “The Dream”. Powerfull stuff.
