AARON FUNK TAKES A LAST STEP

Outsider artist, John Peel favorite, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada based AARON FUNK describes his surroundings as a kind of "Frozen Ibiza" where people love house music and he's added "Coming from Canada, specifically Winnipeg has been a real advantage because whatever you do, nobody is gonna like it." He's probably best known to you as VENETIAN SNARES. Under that alias he has been releasing music since 1999 with an output that has made him arguably the most prolific Canadian producer of electronic music out there with over 22 albums to his name. In fact he's so prolific that after releasing thirteen albums on Planet Mu between 2001 and 2009, Mu even gave him his own label Timesig. Funk has been credited as reinventing Breakcore, and is noted as one of the most eclectic and often abrasive electronic music producers around. His approach to sampling is legendary and was heavily featured on his 2010 Timesig album My So-Called Life but his new album LAST STEP (320 iTunes ready download below) to be released next week under the new project alias SLEEP on PLANET MU reflects an unusual side of his work - more hardware based and in a different pure electronic / IDM realm.

Dro Carey & Andy Petr

Dro Carey, from the Sydney-based label Templar Sound, releases a great collage of sounds right here. Echoing voices, heavy base, with dreamy, yet choppy atmosheres create an unusually-great track. Watch out for more Australian artists dominating the bass scene very soon. Those down underz will sooooon be on top.

Unlooped Vs. Dilla - See You Cry

Last year Unlooped created a new series called ‘Versus.’ ‘Versus’ is a series where Unlooped gathers different Milwaukee artists together to take on and re-interpret a major, influential artist’s music catalog with an electronic twist. The first show in this series was Unlooped vs. Dilla, which debuted September 17, 2011.  Unlooped vs. Dilla, inspired by Miguel Atwood Ferguseon’s Suite For Ma Dukes, brought together a string quartet, electronic producer, and DJ to create a unique take on the productions of the late, great J Dilla.

February 7th was Dilla's Birthday which should have been a national holiday. There I said it! We should've all had off to do nothing but chill, appreciate life, and listen to and celebrate the music and life of Mr. J. Dilla. The Unlooped vs. Dilla Ensemble released the first single from their forthcoming EP called “See You Cry” which is a stellar re-interpretation of Dilla's Don't Cry. You can download the track HERE for FREE.99!

Downliners Sekt - Lorem Ipsum

InFiné releases a free mixtape called Premasters, a celebratory album to end 2011. Music includes the Barcelona-based duo Downliners Sekt, among other songs from Kid A and Clara Motto. “Lorem Ipsum” shows off well-designed, slow motion soundscapes from Sekt.  The track is beautifully minimal, yet sounds heavy like it's filling up space. Possible reason for the lorem ipsum title? This chug-a-lug track will put anyone in a meditative, clear-headed trance. Check it out.

Baconhead!

Some serious spaced out wonk business from the Eat Concrete camp on this fine release by Brighton-based Baconhead.  The 5-track EP consists of a couple different tempos, which in itself is refreshing, but the way Ebola and Autobee squeeze melodies into the compositions amongst the bubbles and zaps is done with finesse. Recommened! Check out the other fine releases from Eat Concrete Records at: http://www.eatconcrete.net/

Jonti - Solar Smoking Dogs (Lucial)

Jonti’s multi-layered music is exciting and impressive for such a young gun. He has has been throwing producers like Mark Ronson for a loop with all his fancy tricks. I like every brainfeeder-sounding track on the Twirligig album, but this one is the most blippy. Check out his abstract videos on youtube for some more fun.

Holy Other - Touch

Holy Other is one of those bands I can't get enough of. Whatever they touch seems to turn to gold. They have released one short EP out titled With U. They also have some great remixes on their soundcloud. I'm addicted, give me more.
