My music obsessions vary but most of the time land on the side of chill with a hearty pinch of rowdy boisterous hip-hop mixed in. The Cell Theory, a group that Taylor Mcferrin was/is apart of falls onto the chill, jazz infused side of things while taking you a bit "farther out" than you would expect. A great album with a great price tag. Scoop it here.
Fifths is a collection of remixes produced by Berlin/London-based beat-maker Ess85. His objective: to give his favorite urban artists an electronic makeover. Much like the producer’s 2010 debut ‘Neon,’ this 5-track EP attempts to fuse hiphop with techno and dubstep. This is a good example of Andreya Triana’s soulful rendition of "Far Closer", juxtaposed with a pulsating low-tempo techno beat – a combination that feels surprisingly natural.
“The idea was to take some of my favorite hiphop and soul tracks and turn them into electronic hybrids, creating a sound the artist is less readily associated with,” says ess85.

Outsider artist, John Peel favorite, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada based AARON FUNK describes his surroundings as a kind of "Frozen Ibiza" where people love house music and he's added "Coming from Canada, specifically Winnipeg has been a real advantage because whatever you do, nobody is gonna like it." He's probably best known to you as VENETIAN SNARES. Under that alias he has been releasing music since 1999 with an output that has made him arguably the most prolific Canadian producer of electronic music out there with over 22 albums to his name. In fact he's so prolific that after releasing thirteen albums on Planet Mu between 2001 and 2009, Mu even gave him his own label Timesig. Funk has been credited as reinventing Breakcore, and is noted as one of the most eclectic and often abrasive electronic music producers around. His approach to sampling is legendary and was heavily featured on his 2010 Timesig album My So-Called Life but his new album LAST STEP (320 iTunes ready download below) to be released next week under the new project alias SLEEP on PLANET MU reflects an unusual side of his work - more hardware based and in a different pure electronic / IDM realm.

She's Back. "Only Fiona Apple could deliver something like the psychologically complex self-analysis on "Every Single Night" and sound elated. Like the lead-off title-track from 2005's Extraordinary Machine, "Night" is all poetry, presented over instrumentation that's been pared to a minimum. "Every single night's a fight with my brain," she declares, and clarifies, "Every single fight's all right." She almost revels in it.
The song ebbs and flows from trembling, whispered musings to loud, triumphant declarations of self-awareness, and the most chilling bits come when Apple makes the quiet parts feel tense and visceral. With a typically exceptional execution of poetic device, she takes a muted affair and colors it, as she fluidly narrates how butterflies (the personification of "ideas") trickle down the spine and swarm the belly before swelling to a blaze. Even as Apple describes the pain of her all-consuming thoughts, it sounds like desire, and her ear for detail helps conjure a sense of physicality. Point in case: "My heart's made of parts of all that surrounds me," and later, "What I am is what I am cause I does what I does."
