AARON FUNK TAKES A LAST STEP

Outsider artist, John Peel favorite, Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada based AARON FUNK describes his surroundings as a kind of "Frozen Ibiza" where people love house music and he's added "Coming from Canada, specifically Winnipeg has been a real advantage because whatever you do, nobody is gonna like it." He's probably best known to you as VENETIAN SNARES. Under that alias he has been releasing music since 1999 with an output that has made him arguably the most prolific Canadian producer of electronic music out there with over 22 albums to his name. In fact he's so prolific that after releasing thirteen albums on Planet Mu between 2001 and 2009, Mu even gave him his own label Timesig. Funk has been credited as reinventing Breakcore, and is noted as one of the most eclectic and often abrasive electronic music producers around. His approach to sampling is legendary and was heavily featured on his 2010 Timesig album My So-Called Life but his new album LAST STEP (320 iTunes ready download below) to be released next week under the new project alias SLEEP on PLANET MU reflects an unusual side of his work - more hardware based and in a different pure electronic / IDM realm.

Fiona Apple Every Single Night

She's Back. "Only Fiona Apple could deliver something like the psychologically complex self-analysis on "Every Single Night" and sound elated. Like the lead-off title-track from 2005's Extraordinary Machine, "Night" is all poetry, presented over instrumentation that's been pared to a minimum. "Every single night's a fight with my brain," she declares, and clarifies, "Every single fight's all right." She almost revels in it.

The song ebbs and flows from trembling, whispered musings to loud, triumphant declarations of self-awareness, and the most chilling bits come when Apple makes the quiet parts feel tense and visceral. With a typically exceptional execution of poetic device, she takes a muted affair and colors it, as she fluidly narrates how butterflies (the personification of "ideas") trickle down the spine and swarm the belly before swelling to a blaze. Even as Apple describes the pain of her all-consuming thoughts, it sounds like desire, and her ear for detail helps conjure a sense of physicality. Point in case: "My heart's made of parts of all that surrounds me," and later, "What I am is what I am cause I does what I does."

Ripostes

Artist Peter T. Quinn aka GPSYMTH has recently come out with his album Ripostes.  This alt/rock tune is airy and eccentric, and it's only $2!  Listen and/or buy it from from his bandcamp.

Mar - Our Attempt

Been waiting for this a long time, and it did not disapoint! A brand new track, written and produced by Mar. I fell in love with Conversations With Her, and I am really looking forward to Seeing Her Naked.

Die Antwoord

Die Antwoord (Afrikaans for 'The Answer') is at it again. And once again...they be on a totally new level of creativity.  A Zef level. The group consists of Ninja, Yo-Landi Vi$$er and DJ Hi-Tek, although Hi-Tek prefers to stay out of the limelight. Yo-Landi has a rave/techno background while Ninja has spent many years perfecting his hip-hop style. Together, they create a badass combustion of energy and sound. Die Antwoord reached stardom by posting their work on the interwebs a few years ago. This was no accident, but a very calculated move.  From their music, photos, videos and shows, their  style is fresh and freeky. Props to them for pushing the envelope, and not giving a flying fuck. Also, they have done a positive thing for South Africa–changing people's view of the country from Aparteid to Zef style. The future of Die Antwoord  is unpredictable and exxxciting.

DAMN! I mean come on man...the future truly belongs to the young and I honestly can't wait to see what they continue to do with it. J£ZUS MILLION is only 17 and he's already bringing that fire, that flame, "THAT HEAT." This track is out of this stratosphere good. Unlooped Vs. Dilla - See You Cry

Last year Unlooped created a new series called ‘Versus.’ ‘Versus’ is a series where Unlooped gathers different Milwaukee artists together to take on and re-interpret a major, influential artist’s music catalog with an electronic twist. The first show in this series was Unlooped vs. Dilla, which debuted September 17, 2011.  Unlooped vs. Dilla, inspired by Miguel Atwood Ferguseon’s Suite For Ma Dukes, brought together a string quartet, electronic producer, and DJ to create a unique take on the productions of the late, great J Dilla.

February 7th was Dilla's Birthday which should have been a national holiday. There I said it! We should've all had off to do nothing but chill, appreciate life, and listen to and celebrate the music and life of Mr. J. Dilla. The Unlooped vs. Dilla Ensemble released the first single from their forthcoming EP called “See You Cry” which is a stellar re-interpretation of Dilla's Don't Cry. You can download the track HERE for FREE.99!

Lapalux - When You’re Gone

I remember Lapalux's first album - many faces out of focus. It kinda split my head back with sounds and textures that I've heard and am consistently hearing, but knew immediately that this young producer had an unmistakable style and approach. His latest effort on the Los Angeles Brainfeeder label entitled "When you're gone" does not disappoint. Amazing and well worth a purchase and share. Learn more on Lapalux from his site.

S.Maharba - French Maid

Out of the dungeons of Ispwich, S.Maharbra resurfaces with a gem, French Maid. With the assistance of now home label BTS Records, S.Maharbra graces us with a very limited 12inch to start things off in 2012. He introduces an extended version of his 2008 track “French Maid” and throws in a remix from The Clonious to make things even more interesting. This is merely the first installment from S.Maharbra and BTS Records. In the coming months BTS Records will re-release and re-master S.Maharba’s 2008 self-titled LP. Is 2012 the year of geeking the f%#k out? Yes!!! So don’t sleep and make sure to grab a copy of French Maid before all 300 copies are gone.

BTS is the label.
S.Maharba is the man.

David Dallas

New Zealand native David Dallas has been tearing up the hip-hop scene for a few years now with his honest lyrics and solid production. Dallas shares some insight on his past, present and future in this interview with yesyesyall.

What can we expect from you in 2012? How will it compare to The Rose Tint?

More tunes. I wanna put out 2 new projects this year. Far as how they’ll compare –  just trying to make them better than what I’ve done in the past. Not trying to take no backward steps over here.

Tell us about your production team Fire & Ice.

2 talented brothers from West Auckland. They’re dudes I actually hang out with so our tastes are really similar, and they’re pretty adept at making cool beats. That suits me just fine.

Sounds like you spend time in NYC, how does it compare to NZ?

It’s dope, way different to what I’m used to in NZ. Definitely took adjusting for me to get used to not having much personal space – going from quiet streets, backyards and driving round in your own car to living in a box, and taking packed trains everywhere was pretty gnarly. It’s nice to experience a different lifestyle though, makes you feel like you’re actually living as opposed to just going through the motions.

Did you grow up listening to any New Zealand hip-hop artists?

Yeah – I still remember hearing Dam Native for the first time and thinking “damn, people in NZ can actually make hip hop music that’s good”. Really opened my eyes.

Your work is lyrically driven, explain your writing process.

People will generally just send me skeletons of beats, which I’ll sit down and vibe with/play in the car etc. Soon as I’ve got some good ideas I’ll try and formulate a proper song. Generally I’ll come up with the verse/hook then record it on the voice memo on my phone so I don’t forget it before I get into the studio.

Mark Lanegan Band

With bassy wardrums and a melody that swings like a sea shanty, the perpetually grim Mark Lanegan returns like a ghost with a chip on it’s shoulder.  Alain Johannes’ (Eleven, Queens Of The Stone Age) reverb-soaked guitar work on the track soar, crash and echo as they follow Lanegan’s gravelly calls.  From a fan’s perspective, had Mark Lanegan released another singer-songwriter song reminiscent of his back catalog there would be an air of disappointment, but it doesn’t fall short of expectations.

The song does have its drawbacks, though.  After a career of over 25 years, it seems that Lanegan’s once-thoughtful lyrical brilliance have lost their luster due to over usage, whereas his sonic constructions have become more and more forward-thinking – a common criticism of practically all of his material since 2001’s Field Songs.  It is, nonetheless, a truly remarkable song, a great departure from his recent work with Isobel Campbell (Belle & Sebastian), and a great follow-up to Mark Lanegan Band’s 2004 release, Bubblegum.

Shabazz Palaces

Black Up is the latest release from Shabazz Palaces, and it's one fuckin' hypnotic album. Distorted beats, evocative lyrics and sludgy sounds create some tripped-out, murky atmospheres. This 'Late Night Creepin' body of work is top of the list of 2011, for sure. A fascinating and grimy track here.

Une Semaine Avec Lui

Voices of Black, consisting of Baba Ali and Jules Born are just out of their teens, but producing some advanced house and hip-hop mixtures. After being introduced to the Wolf+Lamb family in 2010, they released an original house beat tape named 'Plastic Dolls'. Her Flower EP is another step into the house-funk direction.

They’ve fused funky beats and synths, worldly grooves, and an array of vocals and sultry lyrics here.  “Une Semaine Avec Lui” is a refreshingly-dancy track, and I have to give them props for switching up the language.

Très bonne musique ici!

Unlooped Records Winter Beats

Just more proof of how deep Miltown's talent runs. Tarik Moody started the brand spanking new record label Unlooped after the large success of the live events such as the Dilla vs. Unlooped event which started Unlooped Versus Series where different artists works are reimagined. In eary 2012 the series takes on Justin Vernon's Bon Iver. A smaller more intimate event, Winter Beats, is scheduled for this Friday December 2nd at bSide. Tarik got some of the artists that will be performing there to submit tracks for a Promo for the show and the Dave Olson & Scott Radke jointKeep On Movin' is BANGING. Grab your copy here for FREE.

Taprikk Sweezee

A wonderfully wonky, spaced out gem that will have you breaking your mothertrucking neck before relaxing you out. Word to that Smoooth Music. The glitchy nature some of the tracks have while simultaneously maintaining an undeniable melody are what keeps this joint on steady rotation.

Amenta

A great soulful E.P. that's equal parts dreamy, atmospheric and poetic. An overall gorgeous soundscape that when paired with Amenta's chocolatey velvet vocals is a winning combination.

P Villa - Cloudy

High Gravity by P Villa has features by 3 artists who grace a few tracks with some light-hearted raps. The album comes in with “Won’t U Stay?,” a track that begins with a sample of a round of applause, preparing you for a musical experience that feels celebratory.

Download High Gravity here

“Hop Scotch” has a dope bassline, hard kicks, slaps and claps that together make you feel like you’re getting jumped by a slew of women.

My personal favorite on this project is “J108.” It’s spacey. It’s poppy. And after about 45 seconds or so it reminds me of some older Daft Punk. I could picture driving out to the beach (or anywhere else to clear my mind) and vibing to this joint. You gotta play this track. Trust me.
On “Cloudy” Villa samples some of Q-Tip’s vocals from his first major solo hit “Vibrant Thang.” Though the repatative track feels like an interlude that got looped for too long something about it kept me listening.

After listening to the first track I thought of something The Mighty Mos Def said about beat tapes: “The future of hip-hop, to me, is the instrumental album. Once people really get to experience hip-hop as sonic phenomenon away from the personality of a vocalist, it’s like whoa!
I feel similar about instrumental albums. Thanks to the legacy of the late J Dilla and the ongoing legacy of Madlib, hip-hop seems to be headed in that direction. Younger hip-hop lovers are making and listening to beat tapes and instrumental albums seemingly more than ever before.

Axel Boman - Purple Drank

Listen. Everyone loves sunshine, tacos and ice cold Coronas, but summer is over. And while the sun still shines, it just doesn't shine the same; therefore I choose the moonlight. Here comes one deep track from Axel Boman that is much better listened in the darkness. Find a basement, a dim blue light, plug in the Klipsch La Scalas, and invite some weird girls.

Lapalux remixes Thundercat

We saw this tweeted by the Brainfeeder crew recently and have just been sitting on it. lapalux is hands down one of my favorite producers at the moment. His many faces out of focus release just knocked me on my face. He delivers once again with this remix of Thundercat courtesy of the Brainfeeder label.

TiRon & Ayomari

I'm labeling it a classic cause it already is. Honestly it's not a word I throw around freely. It has to be earned and this duo out of where else...L.A. have earned it and them some with A Sucker For Pumps. L.A. is a fucking mecca for for passionate, talented musicians. It's inspiring to see. Sleepwalkers - Rear Window

In a world of progressive rock and painstakingly engineered beats, the world of rock we used to know already changed forever.  With the computer-aided soundscapes and melodramatic nuances that can be tweaked in the blink of an eye, who could blame the path the music industry has taken. Sleepwalkers, who are comprised of Richard Siddall-Jones and Ben Marsden, are a prime example of where the industry can only try to keep up with these blossoming acts.  Of course, the duo would be most easily compared to Radiohead, not because everyone compares every band to Radiohead, Coldplay and U2, but because first and foremost Sleepwalkers’ have the talent to be compared to such acts and their latest Pause EP shows just that.

Perhaps the genius behind the Sleepwalkers moniker is the flawless synergy between Siddall’s expert back-end production and Marsden’s trancelike vocals.  When I first listened to this EP, I immediately began making assumptions of who they sounded like and the Yorke / Greenwood comparison sprung to life.  In fact, I was almost sure this could have been a high-end production of a few Radiohead remakes given the tight loops and drawing vocals.  The beats are quick like that of Thom York’s solo productions (i.e. Eraser), so you can expect some quick-witted remixable tracks here and enough variation to put this EP on repeat.  An easy example here would be this, the opening track “Read Window”.  The vocals are lulling as if in a dreamlike state, while the contrast is the energetic beats that wrap the song in burrito-like fashion.

Sleepwalker’s Pause EP is a melodramatic trip worthy to spin and spin again.  We’re not kidding – If you can’t wrap your head around this one, you might as well find another hobby.

Icebird

RJD2, welcome back! We've missed you while you were on a short hiatus. Aaron Livingston...I honestly didn't know you had this kind of music in you. Not a diss, just the truth. The two have teamed up for an album under the name Icebird that will be titled The Abandoned Lullaby. It drops on October 11th via RJD2's Electrical Connections imprint and I'm genuinely excited after hearing this track. Peace to my dude Tunji that played this on his Rhythm Lab Radio show where I first heard it! He puts shows like this together every week.

Bago - Bad on the bottle

This track is influenza, catch it. Super deep moon gravity spacey electric r&b with production by Alexander Spit. This is the stuff that inspires the hell out of me. You can grab Bago's digi- single here for $FREE.99.

Gold Panda - MPB

I heart this previously unreleased track by Gold Panda, and it is being given away as a free download from his site. It pretty much emcompasses everything I like about this artist.

Jamie XX - Far Nearer

This track is utter hotness and it’s finally avalible. It's off the two track Far Nearer / Beat For - EP. Looking forward to hearing Jamie's collaboration with Drake and the future XX material.

Mo Kolours

It's been a great weekend for new music. I'm pretty damn excited to have as much new, great, music as I do to vibe out to. Excuse the profanity but Mo Kolours EP1: Drum Talking is that shit. Mo Kolours fuses sounds and textures from his half- Mauritian heritage with soul, r&b, hip-hop, electric, and I'd even say a little folk. If you're fast & lucky you can grab 1 of the 8 remaining 12".

Also if you have some time extra time on your hands you should check out this little series here. Good Stuff!

Michael Kiwanuka

Michael Kinuwaka reminds me of Otis Redding. That isn't meant as a knock but compliment. I hear the same passion and soul in his voice as I do ever time I turn Otis on. This artist is something very special. Ever since learning of him from my friend Tarik I've been a bit obsessed...it's been the only music played all day. I just can't help myself. The music doesn't sound of this era but it's refreshing that it is. I'm a big fan. Those in the UK can grab this EP now and those in the States, like myself will have to until June 13th. Until then though you can hear three tracks that aren't on his E.P. here.

http://yesyesyall.org/files/music/01-tell-me-a-tale.mp3

Low - Witches

Low has been around what seems forever, and they still are dropping gorgeous records. They have lost a little bit of the slow expermental edge, instead they seem really focused on just writing good songs. I have to say I really enjoyed this new record C'mon, it fit nicley as the backdrop to any relaxing evening. The song Witches has been on heavy rotation.

Tyson - Out of My Mind (Star Slinger Remix)

Tyson, an up and comer producer from the UK, recently dropped this awesome dance track “Out of My Mind.” What is even more awesome is that YYY fav Star Slinger did a remix that will sho nuff get you dancing in no time. Star Slinger can do no wrong in my book. The single also boasts a remix by The Swiss. I’d love to see Kirstie Alley dance to this jam and try to stay on her feet!

Shlohmo - Places (Yours Truly Remix)

I have been sleeping on Shlohmo, but this track woke me up. It's a remix of the title track from the Places EP. I love where he takes this song. It's  sweet, personal and innocent take on the original track.

Watch the Neighborhood video on Shlohmo.

Seekae - Void

Coming from Australia is the three piece Seekae. The song Void is off of The Sound of Trees Falling On People, which got put out in 2008! It doesn't matter, it's still a beautiful song. It's a very emotional and kinda just sticks to you. It's the kind of track that makes you want to run, or drive fast with the all windows down. I think I could get nostalgic for this track in a few years time, thinking back to the day when I rocked it. They have a new record that just came out. I am still working on digesting it, but it's called +Dome.

There is a good interview here with the band.

Emanuel and the Fear - Trucker Lovesong

I have been listening to this song quite a bit in recent times. It’s epic in arrangement. It has a electro goth feel slightly a late 90s downtempo throwback. Midway through the song it breaks into a beautiful jazzy moment where horns, piano, and woodwinds meld together creating a dreamy break from the harder beat of the first half. As the accordion comes back in with the vocals we are swept into another verse yet the complexity builds into a very layered sound that takes us to the end of the track which ends on a somber note. Epic indeed.

Emanuel and the Fear is an eleven piece orch-rock band from NYC. I sense big things this year for them.

The Weeknd

My friend Tunji put me on and I'm completely infatuated with this mixtape. I know I've said it before but the amount of quality free music asthonises me. All you need is great friends and a keen e-digging technique and you too can enjoy hours of heat for free

The design aesthetic matches the quality of the music which is perfect. This is one of the more cohesive projects I've come across this year.

From the the drowsy melodies to the soulful distorted & echoed vocals, this album does a great job of capturing an overall feeling and inviting you in. GET LOST...oh and you're going to want to be High For This.

http://yesyesyall.org/files/music/01_01_High_For_This.mp3

Truth

The song, “Truth” by Alexander starts out with an Ennio Morricone whistling over an acoustic guitar loop and light jazzy beat. Then comes in the falsetto ooos and ahs. Once the psuedo rapping cadence of Alex Ebert floats in we hear hints of Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros (probably because Alex fronts the band) yet with a tinge of Grizzly Bear . I absolutely fell in love with this song the second I heard it for first time because not only the melody but the lyrics also carry great meaning. Take a deep listen and find out for yourself why Alex Ebert shines either with or without his band behind him. A truly gifted artist.

Mjrhe?vy

This song is a collaboration between Sonny Coates, Shafiq Husayn, and Om'Mas Keith of SA-Ra Creative Partners. They recorded it live and in one-take in Los Angeles. It's vibey... check out the last 15 seconds where they break into waltz time.. it gets swirly and psychedelic. It's a promotional release from the band's upcoming EP which will be released on their label (preamp_+)

Steven A. Clark

So pleasently surprised when I came across this song that is produced, written and performed by the young Steven A. Clark. This is the first single off of his upcoming album titled Stipes. I cannot f*cking wait to hear more from him. You will not be able to turn your head without seeing or hearing from Mr. Clark within a year or so. Tust.

James Blake Releases Self titled L.P.

We've been like giddy school girls anticipating the next Beatles release in regards to feelings surrounding James Blake and this new album which just dropped. Hands down, this is bound to appear not only on our top ten of 2011 but many, many critics. It's such a unique, refreshing sound. if you aren't familiar with Mr. Blake and his previous soundscapes - search for him on the site here and you'll see a few things pop up. CMYK and his other EP's shed light on his style and how he was a fantastic collaborator with Mount Kimbie and the new movement that's been recently born of "dub step." I'm not really sure I can classifiy this music as a "type" of anything as I'm somewhat allergic genres, especially ones that cross over many of them.

That being said - James Blake is opening doors and creating some beautiful music.

More can be found on James here. And you cannot miss this video we recently posted of "The Wilhelm Scream." Just stunning.

Young Magic - Sparkly

I am still picking my jaw off the floor. After listening to the two songs on this release my mouth is watering for more. This song is intricately layered, atmospheric and has beautiful vocals overlaying the sounds. Young Magic is a outfit from NYC and they have dropped a 7" that is also available on bandcamp. Appearenlty they have been signed to Carpark Records, so expect more from them soon.

http://yesyesyall.org/files/music/02_Sparkly.mp3

Thelma & Clyde

Two spots in my personal best of 2011 filled in as many days? GONZO just like this album. Even though this dropped at the end of l 2010 I'm experiencing it in 2011 so it WILL go on this years list. I dare you, defy you even, to find even just one minor thing wrong with the new Thelma & Clyde "White Line" album. It's kushy warm tones and murderously dreamy vocals rival those of Portishead. Yes I said Portishead.
Deal with it.

http://yesyesyall.org/files/music/11_Wicker.mp3

Bon Accord

This is the second group or artist that I like with the name Bon in their name. This track and FreE.P. are late night burners. Put it on and drift away. Bon Accord have a new 12" that drops in February that you can listen to on their Bandcamp page also. It sounds much different from the FreE.P. but it's equally good!

Big K.R.I.T & Grillade

Big K.R.I.T dropped one of the best hip-hop albums of last year. That album received great praise, the chopped and screwed treatment and is now receiving live instrumentation and smokey soulful vocals provided by Grilliade in the form of a 4 track E.P. presented by Yours Truly new label. I can only throw up a selfish wish to those listening that we get to hear more fo this pairing very soon.

You can purchase a digital copy or for a few dollars more purchase a limited edition vinyl that comes with two hand written letters, hand crafted art work, and a donation to The Roots of Music, a program dedicated to saving the youth of New Orleans through Music and Mentorship.

Indigo by Stephen Farris

Another amazing distorted VHS fizzy fuzz love journey crafted by Stephen Harris. Posting "Indigo" because it's more accessible but for the advanced heads I highly recommend the 3rd track "Witch Jazz". In the ever expanding cosm of beats and beat making Stephen is emerging quickly with a promising sound... One clever fella.

a.d.l.r. is Nicholas Morera, a 22 year old musician from LA. This video is for the track Supreme Sunlight off his new album Foam on the Waves of Space-Time from the label Non Projects. It's even available on cassette for a limited time. Now that is going back to the future.

Andy Allo

I admittedly had never heard of Andy Allo until coming across this silky cover of Bon Iver's and Kanye's "Lost In The World". As soon as quick as I could get done listening to it I found that she has an album titled UnFresh on iTunes. I'm "late" to the party...whatever that really means. None of us know about artists until we do. You can check out the grainy dream fuzzed video for the cover.

Underground Gems

This is essentially yanked from Brian's blog. As some of you may or may not know. Brian has been doing a series of mixes - monthly mixes that are by and large . . . large. This Underground Gems is a banger. It came on suddenly, and my ears gave me a warm, fuzzy hug in thanks. My head nodded in unison as well. The mix is done  by Stephen Kelleher. Be sure to visit his site for some beautiful work.

"This month is going to be a bit of a catch up month for last year’s guest mixers. First up for the year is my good bud and superstar Stephen Kelleher. Stephen, aka Frankenstyles, is one of my favorite designer/illustrators out there. Kid has sick skills. We teamed up a few years back for a PSST! Pass it On and had a blast. This Underground Gems mix is like finding an old mixtape from 10 years back packed to the gills with the illest hip hop joints. I am sure this one will bring back fond memories for everyone. Enjoy!"

Yacht - Psychic City (Classixx Remix)

Yacht’s Classixx Remix of Psychic City never ceases to put a smile of my face. From the melody to the lyrics, it’s pretty much perfection. It really captures everything I try to capture in my own work. Wit, charm, and sheer joy. If there were a single song at the moment that represents my own art/design I think this would be it. Which song represents you? Something to think about.

Fancy Mike

This is pure molten LAVA! Fancy Mike dropped this FreE.P. in December and I'm just now catching up with it. As soon as I put it on my head automatically started to nod uncontrollably. You can purchase a high quality version for only $5 or download a 192kbps here for free.

MillionYoung

Record label Arcade Sound is responsible for putting out some of the best music currently hitting my eardrums. Their list of artists includes Memoryhouse, Coolrunnings, Teen Daze and MillionYonung justto name an astonishing few. It's a MillionYoung that I recently discovered though. The Be So True  E.P.sounds so free and honest. Real easy to listen to but it ain't easy listening ya dig. iTunes says it's not supposed to be out until January 26th but it's available now! Also if you want to ease into things (and I can't imagine why you would because the music is NICE!) and get a feel for MillionYoung's music you can grab the Sunndreamm E.P. & the track "Feel the Same" here for free.

Pandit - Artichoke

Pandit is Austin, TX based musician Lance Smith’s moniker. His first single release off the Waaga Records label begins as a hard hitting beat but then softens as a wash of reverberating guitars swells over and is further softened by the following echoey vocals. There are hints of Washed Out, Toro Y Moi, Beach House, and other current indie darlings of the moment here obviously but none the less Lance’s production still shines bright. Keep an eye out for the eventual release of “Eternity Spin” which drops in February.

Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie xx - NY Is Killing Me

Wooooowwwwww. Jamie xx, out of the woodwork with this HEAT. Here's the info on the project, called "We're New Here."

In February 2010, Gil Scott-Heron released "I'm New Here", his first album in thirteen years. In August 2009, as a member of The xx (and producer) Jamie xx released his debut album "xx". "NY Is Killing Me" is the first song from "We're New Here", Jamie xx's reworking of 13 tracks from the Gil Scott-Heron "I'm New Here" sessions.

Scuba - Before

So much of Dubstep is about that wobbly bass and signature drum patterns. People like James Blake and Scuba are pushing it to a different place. It's almost not even the same genre anymore, it's something else entirely. This track Before has some nice vocals that make Scuba a little more accessible than some of the other tracks on Triangulation. I feel a of their music has complexity below the surface, it takes a few listens to really understand it. Triangulation is a solid album that takes the music in lots of directions, including twists and turns.

HeRobust remixes Bambara

Disgusting. Heavy. Risickulous. Massive. Luvly. Fire. All comments left by some of the industry's finest while listening to Hayden Kramer's ( AKA heRobust ) latest remix of Bambara - Drag Hesitation on his soundcloud page. Strongly encourage you to download the track here and visit heRobust and give him a shout out or two...or three.

Given how dirty and raw this remix is, it seems fitting to give it a appropriate image by Parra. If you aren't familiar with Parra. Get Familiar.

Computer Jay “Phantom”

This has been out for a minute surfing around the interwebs only to settle on the shores here. Dam and Jay are keeping the funk alive on issue 7 of AllCity Dublin's LA series. This track is crazy yo.

J?¥ ÆLECT®?NIC?

Unless you have been away from every form of communication known to man for the past few days you already know that one of our favorite emcees, Jay Electronica, has signed with Jay-Z's Roc Nation imprint. We've been very vocal in our admiration for Electronica's abilty on the mic and we think this just adds to the anticipation for his official proper debut album. The song that he performed live at the announcement of his signing which is also titled Announcement might be the most indepth conceptual lirical display of the year. Jay-Z is building a very impressive roster of artists. Always keeping things interesting and exciting for music fans.

The image of Jay Electronica, that has been destorted a bit, comes from my friend Ouni's A Polaroid Story blog. Most Def worth checking out.

Alphabet Soup

It’s Rock-tober all month with WWE On-Demand sunn; press record on the VHS player now!!! Moving forward, Four Lokos is serious. Drinking and driving down Whittier Boulevard I was on level 99 last Friday. I had the Stephen Farris EP in the tape deck with the volume set to ten and people at every intersection were asking, “How can I be down?” This continued all night. It was overwhelming. My recent find at comtruise.com had all of LA buggin out. The next day I knew this VHS tape sampling, circuit bending, beat wizard from Houston must get props on YYY. Without delay, download Alphabet Soup HERE and grab me two aspirin please.

Update: On one of my late night data-mining exploits I discovered an exceptional release titled VHS Vision from Mr. Stephen Farris, which he produced under the alias, Cosmic Sound.

Zach Hill

Zach Hill, drummer for many groups you've probably heard of, dropped a pretty face-smashingly eclectic album this week. The lead track to the album Memo to the Man bangs hard as f*ck and then jerks in an unexpected but welcomed psychedelic direction. Travis Barker should just shelf his watered down attempt at a solo album now.

DREAD

Fresh cut from talented Leeds-based producer Jack Sparrow, on Pinch's Tectonic label.  Sick sick sick.  This is a heavy album full of slappy, dubbed-out tech rhythms.  One for the heads and for the late night dancehall crew to get sweaty to.

Starslinger
Ahhhhh...the beauty of the web and the endless discoveries one can find. Wake the fuck up and listen to Starslinger...NOW!

Hailing from a small village in Nottinghamshire, Darren now lives in the heart of Manchester, UK. A place home to many of hisidols. Darren started out life as a musician by reading guitar chord books, toying with Casio keyboards, begging his mother to buy him turntables, and spending his learning allowance on building a computer solely for music production at the age of 14.

By 2007 he had two 12” vinyl releases to his name in the dance music arena. One of those an EP, championed by Paul Van Dyk, one appearing on a guest mix on Radio 1. However Dance Music became somewhat limited to Darren. The 4/4 kick drums, syncopated basslines and 8 minute 12” mixes became too easy to churn out and all this time Darren had a vinyl collection which boasts everything from forgotten UK soul bands to Cocteau Twins to De La Soul. It is a collection built upon years of devotion to dusty second-hand record stores adorning his (back then) rural surroundings. It is this eclectic mix that has no doubt lead him go on to become a producer of beat tapes.

The new Volume 1 LP samples everything from child-fronted reggae bands (Musical Youth) to funk (Parlaiment) to 90’s soul (Mint Condition), to 80’s rock (Big Country) and more. The 11 track release has an uplifting vibe, and work on Volume 2 (Jetpack Jam) is well underway.

So you've heard James Blake's CMYK release, which was one of the best glitchy, smart, almost unclassifiable releases this year. He's back again with yet another 2010 release, titled Klavierwerke (which simply means "piano work" in German), featuring a lot less sampling and a lot more use of his own voice (which happens to be really good).

"Limit To Your Love" actually isn't on Klavierwerke, but simply a cover he did of an original Feist song from her 2007 album The Reminder. The video is beautiful, and directed by Martin de Thurah.

To give you the full James Blake package, I also uploaded a song that IS off Klavierwerke, titled "I Only Know (What I Know Now)."

Salem - King Night

Okay, so normally this would be 2 paragraphs of text describing the band, the song, maybe little factoids like "where I heard it first" or "how I discovered this", but all fuckery aside.

Play this song.

Play it really loud.

Trust me, you'll shall scour the earth on your hands and knees for more.

Pete Philly - Open Loops

Pete has had this in the works for a bit and it's pretty fucking outstanding. Similar to what Kanye is doing with GOOD Fridays, buuuuuuuut can I, or shall I say, better? The site by Momkai is fantastic. The fullscreen video transitions / backgrounds very well done, and shit, we're talking about Pete Philly - the tracks are solid. Oh, did I mention the tracks are FREE for download....

Taylor McFerrin

Remember "Don't Worry, Be Happy" by Bobby McFerrin. Shame that he's become known for one of the weaker songs of his repertoire. We've posted on his son Taylor in the past and I just stumbled on a new EP he's come out with - or I should say a preview. I think I listened to this about 10 times yesterday. This and the My hollow Drum mix Kenneth posted yesterday have me in fine aural bless. The amazing thing about this track how the young McFerrin is exploring with dub, I didn't think that was part of his range.

If Your Girl

Helloooo, my name is Hassan Rahim Muhammad Shabazz, art director/designer & blogger from sunny Los Angeles, California, and I'd like to express how happy I am to be the newest member and curator of tastes on Yes Yes Y'all. You can find me here regularly, and we can be friends if you like what you see.

It was this very day a friend of mine sent me a few MP3s by Forest Swords, the experimental, psychedelic, ambient project of Liverpool producer Matt Barnes. The track that immediately caught my ear was "If Your Girl", a very dark cover of Aaliyah's "If Your Girl Only Knew". The rest of his EP, titled "Dagger Paths", carries along the same vibe, with "Glory Gongs" being the other main standout track. The album got a pretty nice review on Pitchfork recently (Some of the most brutal music critics around).

For those uninitiated, Scott Hansen runs a blog under his alias ISO50. A chap by the name of Jakub posts there and I have to say that most of what he posts, I'm immediately smitten with. He enlightened me to Peter Broderick's music. His latest release How they Are feels honest, pure, something that should played along to your favorite french film as an accompanying soundtrack. If you're not a fan of french films, Spanish, or German would do fine . . . I've had this particular track, Pulling the rain on a constant repeat. Just beautiful. Fitting for the changing of the seasons and welcoming of cooler weather.

Pantha Du Prince - Lay In A Shimmer

I found this album the other night rummaging though a old friends last.fm playlist. I have to say that this is one of my favorite records in a long time. I have only had it a day or so and it sticking to my ears like syrup. I am a sucker for digital music that feels organic, and Pantha Du Prince do just that. They have lots of space in their music. Their sound is a mixture of genres, so but I can't really pin them down to one. They do lean a little towards some sort of dance music, but this is will clear a dance floor in it's tracks. It's a little too freaked out to break out the glow sticks. It's more of a head nodding kind of affair. The entire record Black Noise is highly recommend, it's extremely solid.

Actress

Werk Discs head and UK music don Actress follows up his debut Hazyville;being critically acclaimed across the board for its atmospheric, ambient moods, ) the second album, entitled Splazsh. It's set to expand on those themes, taking in a broader range of styles you might find akin to one of his DJ sets (real electro, disco, house and UK bass).

Found this appropriate write up on Pitchfork ( the site I love to hate ) Andy Battaglia nails Actress. Actress himself has called his music "R&B concrète," and that helps illuminate the way he works from both inside and outside a track. He has an ear for building up a song from the bottom (like a pop producer) and then abstracting it from the top (like a musique concrète technician), so that he makes some incredibly strange sounds surprisingly palatable-- and without making a big show of their strangeness.

Sufjan Stevens - Too Much

I'm really excited about the new Sufjan Stevens full length The Age of Adz. I'm digging the direction he's going in, a sound that's very experimental with the inclusion of lots of electronic pieces. Sufjan's music has always leaned towards folk, but this is going in an entirely new direction. I like it when an artist bucks the trend of what he or she is known for, and decides to do something bold. Big, bigs ups for to doing something different. The record is available for pre-order now on Asthmatic Kitty.

Ghost With Motor (Demokracy In The Shell Mix)

Dirty, sci-fi funk, low-end trunk music with booms and slaps = Demokracy, Russian duo, Hmot & Damscray. These two are the next it artist for 2011. With no official release yet, they’re making quite some noise. Monday Jazz and music blog Sonic Router were already keen to Demokracy letting the duo concoct a mix for each of them. Your ears won’t be in despair for long for the duo has a forthcoming EP on Robox Neotech along with many remixes already stacking up, and some projects to early to reveal. YYY has been blessed exclusively with a recent ghostly remix of Lapti’s, Ghost with Motor. This track was once released via soundcloud, but reached its download limit and now has a new life with us. Stay up to date at the Demokracy facebook.

Vex Ruffin - Man With The Plan

Stones Throw has has done it again. "Man With The Plan" is possibly the freshest track of their recent 2010 Sampler. Vex Ruffin is the shit!!! I can't wait to see what's next form this Chino Hills native. If you want more? Vex put out an EP not to long ago called "Vex Ruffin and the Lo-fi Jerkheads" and I believe he has a spilt 7" floating around as well. A post on these classics will be up soon. Till then, enjoy this awesome track.

My Chain (Brotherhood Crusade Remix feat. $tellarMovement!)

When we started yesyesyall some odd three years ago, it was under a premise to share music, work, pieces and bits and things that crawl into our brains and dont loose hold. To spread the love for these little bits and pieces and hope it helps you on your daily routines. Whether it be in creativity, accounting, bike riding, or counting rocks. A young producer by the name of Brotherhood Crusade emailed us and I'm plesantly surprised at some of the pieces this 18 yr old is making.

He has more here and here.

Thanks Zeke.

Pariah - Detroit Falls

Holy F#$k! My jaw is dropping on the track. The sounds of Pariah are so dense and rich it's making my head spin. I love the balance of chaos and order in the track Detroit Falls. There is not much released by Pariah yet, but go cop some of his music. Highly recommended.

The image matched- up to this is by Michigan photographer Peter Baker, who also helped us build the new YYY. Massive props to Peter.

Crumbs - Pieces & Portions Vol. 2

Crumbs is a side project from Max Kohane of Australia. This is the 2nd installment of Pieces & Portions, we mentioned the first album before. The record is a perfect mix of beats and samples from all over the spectrum of music. The title of the record even suggests that little bits of influences have been stringed together to create the sound. The album features Melbourne artists Nisa Venarosa from a band called Fabulous Diamonds and Mikey Young from Eddy Current Suppresion Ring.

Max is a drummer by trait and plays in various grindcore/thrash/experimental bands. Current projects include Agents of Abhorrence, Internal Rot, PIVIXKI and Brain Children. All of which sound nothing like Crumbs.

Gang Colours

Will Ozanne aka Gang Colours is a Southampton based producer who began making beats at around the age of 14. We stumbled upon Will late one night while actually skimming the lovely blog you'll soon know.us  (have a look when you can.) We were smitten with Will's works and have been fortunate to have had some short but sweet conversations with him. As you listen to his music, you'll pick up on a wide range of influences. He seems adept at moving from beat laden pieces to work that has deeper, atmospheric layers. An interesting little tidbit that indicates the level of sophistication in his work is that he carries a dictaphone around with him whereever he goes to capture anything that could be used and sampled in his music. He has recently collaborated with London MC GhostPoet (Brownswood Recordings) remixing his first single 'Carry Me Home' (release date TBA).  And has gained support from radio one's Gilles Peterson, who aired the tracks 'No Clear Reason' and 'In Your Gut Like A Knife'  (featured here) on recent  shows. Our best guess is that you'll be hearing more from Gang Colours soon.

Say My Name

This was hard to track down till a couple days ago where it showed up on iTunes and eMusic. Happy that it did. I had no idea what label he was signed too, and when you do a google search for say my name all you get is destiny child links. Say My Name's first project is a sure hit. There are a lot of chopped and screwed tracks that are composed beautifully. Somehow he was able to sound uniquely retro and youthful at the same time. Here's a little more taken from the label Rangelife

Say My Name's S/T EP is 8 tracks of tangy twists and ice-cold instrumentation, a travelogue through 70's World Music and scratched Blaxploitation LP's cut together in his Lawrence, Kansas apartment. Say My Name has done beats for Dri's "Smoke Rings", remixes for White Flight, Suzannah Johannes and Hospital Ships, and played lead guitar in Fourth Of July. This is his first solo project.

Andreya Triana -  A Town Called Obsolete (Mount Kimbie Remix)

If Andreya Triana 's voice seems familar, you may have heard her on Flying Lotus's track Tea Leaf Dancers. She has a new solo album Lost Where I Belong coming out soon, and it's produced by Bonobo. That is sure to make some serious waves when it get's released. This track is remixed by Mount Kimbie, who seem to turn everything they touch in to fire.

heRobust - Grief Case

YYY crew has been swooning over the beats of Alanta based Hayden Kramer, aka HeRobust. His freaked out version of electronica and hip-hop is addictive to say the least. I especially love the moments when he mixes in some sugary sweet RnB. I predict we will be hearing some really big things from this artist in the future.

Lazerproof

Diplo and Switch, the masterminds behind Majorlazer have taken a handful of tracks from La Roux and done some tasty remixes. Best of all IT'S FREE. Ahhhhhh, ya gotta love that. Summer james for the hot ass climate that don't cost you more than the click of a button.

Impact Omnihammer

Highly recommended berserker beat instrumental from Loops Haunt, one of the many talented individuals associated with the Lucky Me crew. Those cats have the mind bender rhythm aesthetic down cold. Another fine release on the constantly intriguing Black Acre label, and a go to weapon for the dancefloor. (If you're playing for rubber androids.)

RLP “Works”

Yes.. another gladiator from outer space has stepped into the arena. This long awaited (at least by me!) album by Japan beat surrealist RLP has finally arrived. I remember finding this cat a couple years ago through some random link diggin, cross referencing, showed up on a mix here and there kinda frenzy. This is for all 8bit, whaa whaaa, bleep bloop blippin', off-beat lovers. A project presented at such a high quality, not even sure which track to post cause it's so good. You decide.

Brothertiger

It's hard to create one track that lifts people away with how it makes them feel. Accomplishing that with 6 consecutive tracks is just gonzo. Wind at My back was released for free as a single via Brothertiger's Bandcamp Page. He then released an E.P. titled Vision Tunnels that carries a $1 minimum price tag. But come on y'all, I know you have at least $3 to share for an E.P. this good.

Big Boi presents “Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty”

That's right, incase you haven't heard the news.. Big Boi has finally released another solo album. There's so much to be said really, way too much for one post.. It's unanimous that this is a dope album from beginning to end. You can really appreciate his influence on Outkast's style. So the story so far as I know it is.. Andre and Big Boi will come together and create another Outkast album only after Andre finishes his solo project. Can't wait for that! If you're wondering about the name of the album and his new moniker, check out the wiki page, tons of info there.
