Mark of daymightsame sent us a very kind note the other day expressing his pleasure in some of our musical selections. It only seems right to expose the work he’s doing as daymightsame. Some really lovely compositions. I exchanged some emails with Mark and he shed some light into his music which can be found below:
How does living in NY affect your music?
My music studio is a converted closet. It’s new york, so they said the closet was an office. There’s so much happening here and so many interesting musicians playing at any moment that it’s hard to not be inspired.
How has Hip Hop affected your music? Has it affected it?
I listen more to the production than the lyrics in music so I’m drawn to hip hop producers with distinct sounds. the grey album (jay-z / danger mouse) is one of my favorites of all time. in terms of influences, I’ve been directly affected by producers like dilla, madlib, and diplo and of course my friends in nyc like producer/mc domer
On this first album of yours – how many different instruments are you playing?
I play a couple different instruments: bass, guitar, and piano/keyboard/synths. all the drums were programmed, even though people have asked if i played them on that middle part in “stevia.” i’m not a machine. but maybe someday.
Do you have a favorite track, if so why?
The play count in itunes tells me i listened to “holga” the most. I think that’s because i like the way it unfolds and how dense parts of it are. I remember writing it thinking “i’m want to make something weird but warm on the inside.”
