Banco De Gaia - Songs From The Silk Road

After hearing  Banco de Gaia (aka Toby Marks) on Sirius XM Chill station, I fell in love with his music. Songs From The Silk Road might be my new favorite album.  Released earlier this year, the album reveals two decades of recordings, hits and remixes from this father of elecronica. This is a compilation of his best work; a cross-pollination of world music and house. The album vibrates with a tribal electricity.

“I wanted to round up the body of work and create a portfolio for new listeners. The origins of this sound, a sound that’s now ubiquitous, are really interesting, and I want people to know more about it. Back then in early days, we were inventing this whole new thing. This album shows that, and how things have evolved since,” says Gaia.

Jensen Sportag - Gentle Man

We've been following Jensen Sportag for awhile now. They seem to be one of the few groups that are able to channel the magic and mystique of 80's R&B and transform it into something that both feels relavant yet contemporary for today. We have been given the opportunity to debut a new track for the boys entitled Gentle Man. It's been one of my favorite tracks of the summer and has been in constant rotation since the moment it landed in our inbox. Put down the electro wash, autotuned soaked, over produced tunes you've been listening to and wrap yourself up in the sonic gift Jensen Sportag is providing us with today.

More on Jensen can be found at their site, on their soundcloud, and a wonderful write up on them by the Guardian.

Don't sleep on this band.

Alphabet Soup

It’s Rock-tober all month with WWE On-Demand sunn; press record on the VHS player now!!! Moving forward, Four Lokos is serious. Drinking and driving down Whittier Boulevard I was on level 99 last Friday. I had the Stephen Farris EP in the tape deck with the volume set to ten and people at every intersection were asking, “How can I be down?” This continued all night. It was overwhelming. My recent find at comtruise.com had all of LA buggin out. The next day I knew this VHS tape sampling, circuit bending, beat wizard from Houston must get props on YYY. Without delay, download Alphabet Soup HERE and grab me two aspirin please.

Update: On one of my late night data-mining exploits I discovered an exceptional release titled VHS Vision from Mr. Stephen Farris, which he produced under the alias, Cosmic Sound.

Evenings

I'm astonished at the amount of quality music that exists. I'd happily pay for any of it and honestly that seems to be the point. We live in a fast pace, nothing is still, move baby move, what have you done for me lately society. But if you give something away for Free it gets people's attention. Add quality into the mix and people will remember you once it is time to shell out a few dollars. I don't know much about Evenings except that his free E.P. has my stereo speakers hostage for the past few weeks. The atmosphere that he manages to capture over the E.P's five songs is breathtaking and definitely worth a free download.

The image that accompanies this post seems to capture the sound of the music perfectly and was taken by Andrew. Please have a look at his photography here.

Depakote Beats

In a beat world of bleeps and bloops Eric “Depakote” Lopez Says “No!” to the synthy-fuzzy off beat revolution that has the kids going bananas right now. “I have to do me, and me is sample based hip-hop,” Eric states every time we speak on the beat scene. Before you start thinking it is about the that bleep sound, give this guy listen and you know why Marry Ann Hobbs featured his first Indy label release “It’s Not 94 Any More” on her site. Along with that push from MAH, Eric has received recognition from many prominent radio shows and websites through out his career. With that said, Eric has a new release called “Gummo.” It’s a boom bap dusty head-noder that is a must for your hip-hop beat collection. Do the right thing and scoop this up sunnn. If you don’t believe me, “LilyKoranic” should convince you.

heRobust - Grief Case

YYY crew has been swooning over the beats of Alanta based Hayden Kramer, aka HeRobust. His freaked out version of electronica and hip-hop is addictive to say the least. I especially love the moments when he mixes in some sugary sweet RnB. I predict we will be hearing some really big things from this artist in the future.

Samoyed

Move over Tim Hecker – looks like I just discovered a new favorite ambient artist. I developed a distinct taste for “ambient” “soundscape” music from many nights listening to hearts of space on NPR with my father. Interesting how our childhoods shape us all. The music my parents played for me as a child and the music I listened to is still a bedrock of my centralized taste.

I digress. I discovered Samoyed off a really wonderful mix he did for Luckyme Fam recently. I strongly suggest you go grab it as it’s very well put together. Sam’s album Always from this point is more consistent and if one were to classify – shoegazy. Have I mentioned how much I hate labels?? The orchestration, especially on this one particular track has this wonderful build and swell.

Have a stroll over to his Myspace. Pick up the album hereas well.

Hope you enjoy this on a lovely Thursday morning.

The image is of a photographer I stumbled upon haphazardly (aren’t all interweb discoveries haphazard and unexpected ) and was taken by the mystery of her shots. She’s a newcomer to photography I believe as well. Have a look at more of Li Hui photographs. I felt as though this shot was a nice addition to Samoyed’s music.

I’ve labeled this as inspiration as I LOVE working to this music.

Wu Tang vs the Beatles - Got Your Money

Looking to find another rad mashup to get your body moving? Well, if you’re a fan of both Wu-Tang Clan ANDThe Beatles, you’re in luck. Enter The Magical Mystery Chambers by Wu-Tang Vs The Beatles, is a new album produced by Tom Caruana and it features samples of “Fab Four” tunes with Wu-Tang acapella tracks.

It will melt your face off, trust me.

Way Up!

I have been feeling this track for a while now. Every time it plays I feel transformed to a different place. It’s a perfect way escape from day to day life. The name Washed Out perfectly describes the sound of this music.
