My Morning Jacket - Victory Dance

My Morning Jacket could be considered one of the leaders of the neo-folk explosion of the last few years. They patented a sound of reverb and echoey vocals layered over a jangled wall of guitars and snare drums. With each release they evolved, trying out new things, and with today’s release of “Circuital” we hear a new other-ness that they have yet explored. Here MMJ seems to have found, like Danger Mouse, an interest in classic Italian Cinema. From the Morricone-esque horns of the intro of the track “Victory Dance” to the murky Goblin-esque build up of distorted psychedelic climax, the track has this Giallo feel to it. The cover art even looks like a Dario Argento film poster. It’s nice to see MMJ’s ever evolving sound and delve into something I never expected.
