NSFW

Noteworthy

There has been a lot of talk on the internet about what is safe for work. Diesel just had a ad campaign where they masked out explicit parts of porn with animations and called it ‘Safe For Work’. This video apparently got banned from YouTube for being allegedly explicit. What I did not realize that this is an official video for Flying Lotus, produced by Warp Films. We love Flylo here at YYY, so I had to post. Enjoy.

Écouter

Guilty Pleasures

We all know that LA is on some hip hop shit, right? There is a lot going on in The City of Angels. Some of the music that comes out of LA sounds so much better here than outside the city. You need the context of LA to fully understand music from this city. Check out Carmen Rizzo, really feeling his new record Ornament of an Imposter.

I made a new category for this track, because this type of music is really a guilty pleasure. It’s like overloading on candy, it’s so sweet it makes me a little sick. I have to keep the doors locked when I listen to it.

I paired this track up with the Photography of Marni Horwitz. I really like the series of images titled “Desire Despair: Pictures from the Czech Republic”, really beautiful work.

LE N?KO

The Beats

Nice stuff here from France’s Le Neko on the 5th installment of the popular All City Beat Series, his first solo release. He also recently produced a track for Maspyke MC Hanif Jamyl called “Krushed Grapes.” Watch out for that.

Nebulo

Track of the day

I have been listening to Avutma on constant rotation because the tracks on this album are stellar, just straight up stellar. I’ve also been a huge fan of French native Nebulo since his 2006 release of Koila which quite frankly was the IDM/Ambient album of the year. What’s really outstanding about Nebulo are his compositions, sound, energy, and everything in between. A truly epic effort for a very cinematic album.

If your a fan of Hecker your in for a real treat. Not only is it as classic and timeless as Harmony in Ultraviolet but it is as unique and beautiful sounding with a very distinct perspective. Ness will agree with me (I’m sure), but this is very inspirational music to work too.

For me personally, its great music to reflect on as well.

This album is flying under all major radars (eMusic, iTunes). Finding it was very difficult. The only places I found that you can get the release were mostly in Europe and I wish I could point you to a particular website to buy it. I found it on Amazon, The Omega Order, N5 Mailorder and Equilibrium. You can order the album from Hymen Records, too.

You have to do your best to get this album. IT’S WELL WORTH THE TIME AND MONEY. Look out for upcoming Nebulo remixes from Architect and Hecq as well.

Get it here. Or where ever you can track it down on.

Taking things out of Context.

Noteworthy

Nice little piece that shows what happens when you take things out of context. It’s related to The Contrarian.

Ayatollah

The Beats

If your in the market for some soulful Brooklyn grooves then look no further. Ayatollah’s new effort Drum Machine is a continuation of his previous efforts completed with new and interesting production styles. Rich with samples and heavy handed drum loops Ayatollah continues to do what he does best – creating hip-hop cadence.

Good album to rock while working, riding, or whatever other extracurricular activities you indulge in.

Check it out here.

Thriller/BBQ/Genie

The Beats

Unknown artist, unknown label, mystery album. Anyone know who this is? Please let us know. Pretty clever concept for a release, maybe we’ll find out one day? Or maybe the artist doesn’t want to be known? That’s coolie high too. The style is like a mixture of Bullion, Madlib, and Rustie.. but who knows who this cat really is! Show yo’self! It’s got a fresh early 90’s R&B undertone, which I’m really diggin. Makes me wanna bust out my old Loose Ends tracks. Anywho, the two beats are fresh (only posting half of one since it’s a short album, gotta be fair to our unknown talent), give it a peep.

Only 300 copies were made!

Brittany Bosco

Track of the day

This shorty’s got the fiya southern fonk space shit! Straight outta Savannah, Georgia, and also a student at SCAD, Brittany Bosco’s nothing short of multi-talented. Her soulful lyrics and beats are a nice addition to the recent movement of female hip hop singer/rappers like Georgia Anne Muldrow, Kissey Asplund, and Muhsinah. Her album “City of Nowhere” is solid and a must have for Beat Generation, and Soul music lovers alike. Beats are by local Savannah producer Alex Goose.

Combustion

Track of the day

I feel fortunate right now. Fortunate to live in a period of time where mediums, genres, disciplines are all folding together. Like a big ole pot of gumbo. Experimental gumbo. “Let’s throw this in there – how’s about a little some of that?” Given the fact that I roam in a digital realm with my work – experimenting in interactive and motion – I continue to see some pretty phenomenal things.

I stumbled upon Marcelo Baldin’s site recently and was taken in by the work featured, the shell of the site ( which is stellar ) and of course by his sound design. His site and alias is Combustion. You MUST take a section to go there – gawk at the motion work by some of the industries best and download his free, yes FREE E.P. entitled Éléphant. Click on Hear to download the E.P.

Enjoi –

Bravo Marcelo.

Dive EP

Noteworthy

Really wanted to post this because of the amazing Flying Lotus Remix + instrumental! More yummy beats.. (Which I’m only posting part of, the rest of the track is bangin). If it sounds familiar that’s because you probably heard it on Ras G’s Beat Soup Mix I think this will be a good year for music again. Been able to see Blank Blue Live at the Low End Theory and let me tell you, her (Niki Randa) voice DOES sound that good. Other than the remixes by Flylo, there’s some cool reworkings by the group of some tracks from the Western Water Music Vol.2 album. Def worth a listen.

The Beats

Ohhh Raaaaas! Don’t even know where you can find this one.. just another dope Ras G beat to share with yall. The beginning kinda reminds me of some old Three Six Mafia beat… strange yes. Keep watch on the Afrikan Space Program, they’ll be beaming a bunch of new jams before the year is out.

ZIG ZAG

Track of the day

Yikes!

Absolutely crushing track from RUSTIE, finally released proper on the Wireblock label. Starting off with some bubbly, synthy goodness, this track takes off like a jet with the craziest lead arps I’ve ever heard. Rustie has a special way of jerking you around with the mixed tempos in the most ass shaking way possible. Next level business.

You can buy it directly from Wireblock Records
Or just browse their site for all things slamming.

Dday One

The Beats

Heavy Migration is pretty sick. Dday One is quickly emerging from L.A. as a notable beat maker. He has been requested to print more vinyl for various selectors and has caught the attention of underground broadcaster Mike Nardone.

Some interesting aspects of this album include tracks with off-beat, glitchy samples (that fall off beat to sync later) and sneaky hooks that you don’t see coming. Each track has a little surprise.

Ivana XL Podcast 10

Podcasts

We’ve been fans of Ivana XL for a while now and decided to ask her throw us some tracks for a podcast for you all. Then we got our man Geebz to put the podcast together. Good looking Geebz! This podcast is a little different in that we asked her to send us some of her favorite tracks and some of her own, well she did us one better…She sent us some of her favorites and a NEVER BEFORE RELEASED or HEARD track of her own called Two Little Dogs to end the podcast off! So please enjoy the relaxing mellow tunes on this beautiful Tuesday morning. She was also kind enough to answer some Q+A’s below. . .

The songs that are in the podcast, what do they do for you that others don’t?

These are all songs that are on heavy rotation on my boombox at the moment. They also happen to be songs that friends of mine have turned me on to recently. They all blew me away instantly.. especially the France Gall.

Where is your favorite place to listen to music?

In a car! It’s rare that I get to ride in a car, living in New York. I used to drive (and crash) Plymouths, mostly. I really miss being completely surrounded by speakers, and MOVING. I was a terrible driver, so it’s better this way, for you and for me.

Where is your favorite place to write music?

Anywhere where I know people can’t hear me! My building has ears. (My neighbors ears. And the people outside my windows ears, sometimes.) I get really embarrassed when I get knocked at on the wall or ceiling. I think the bathroom is a nice spot though. Great acoustics.

What inspires you other than music?

I guess anyone that listens to my stuff hears that it’s 99% about love/heartbreak. So THAT, but also just human relationships in general. Most people have had their heart broken or you know, destroyed haha. We’ve all broken hearts, or will, and we are all going to lose people that we love for one reason or another and we’ve got to deal with it. So nobody is really alone in this. It’s the greatest thing to have figured out.

If you had to pick one song to represent you the best what would that song be?

That’s tough!..but automatically I think of Guantanamera. My mom used to sing it to me all the time. It was the first song I learned to play on guitar. It was always sort of floating around in my life.

If you had the choice to put a band together to back you on an album who would you pick?

I’d choose Will Oldham. I’d ask him to play every instrument, and sing, teach me to play the piano, and then I’d ask him to be my husband. I don’t see why he wouldn’t want to just drop every genius thing he’s got going on now and go with me? Also, I really enjoy two person bands. There’s something very special about watching just two people on a stage do everything.

If you had the choice to select any musician (alive or dead) in the world to produce a Ivana XL Album who would it be and why?

Robert Pollard. Every Guided By Voices album has been hugely important for me. I love the fact that some songs don’t even clock in at a minute long. Sometimes you say what you have to say in 58 seconds.. ya know? If it wasn’t for his music and production I’d probably be writing like verse/chorus/verse/bridge/chorus, now. The formula. Which isn’t always so much fun.

You have a nice amount of new songs out… Do you plan on putting another album out anytime soon and any idea of what it may be called?

I plan on just releasing songs as they come on itunes and Myspace until I can produce an album properly. I’m calling the EP I just put out “demo style” even. Eventually I’d love to sit down and take all the demos I have, pick 11 or so and re-do them. It’s a matter of money though. Waiting on the jackpot.

You’re rich and you love music so you decide to put on a Dave Chapelle like show of all of your favorite artists…Who would be on the bill and what would the event be called?

It would be called “Amazing Sandwich”. I’d ask Lucinda Williams, Emily Haines, Guided By Voices, Nirvana, Me Without You, Mozart, Leonard Cohen, Broken Social Scene… many more.. the sandwich would be truly amazing.
